Dear Allison,
As you read this I'm probably driving
down some dark, deserted country road on my way to free myself from whatever
it is that keeps holding me back. This dark cloud, it seems, keeps following
me from relationship to relationship and I have finally decided that there
must be something inside of me that needs to be exorcized or all of my
relationships are bound to fail.
You have said time and time again that
you think that I'm afraid of commitment. I think that's true to a certain
extent but there are also many other things that I am afraid of. All of these
fears paralyze me and make it almost impossible for me to keep moving forward
in an intimate relationship.
I worry about nonsensical things like
clutter. Do you know that the night that you spent the night I nearly had
a panic attack because your toothbrush was laying wet and soggy on the bathroom
vanity? I mean it was just out there in plain sight a puddle forming around
the head of the brush. And I thought to myself, "How can I possibly live
looking at this toothbrush everyday?" Oh, it wasn't just the toothbrush.
It was also your shoes on the living room floor, your makeup residue on the
dresser, that drop of milk on the kitchen counter and your endless files
of paper that you carry around in the briefcase.
No matter, the bottom line is that I can't
have you in my space and what kind of life is that for either of us? I don't
want to be alone for the rest of my life. With you, I thought I really had
a chance of settling down and having a real family for once but all of these
worries crowd out the joy that I feel with you until there is only dread
and stress remaining.
Allison, you are so dear to me. You have
to believe that. I just can't be the man that you want right now or the one
that you deserve. So I'm afraid I am going to have to call us off for right
now. As much as I hate to, I have to do it for us both. I need to go find
myself and figure out why these little things always become huge obstacles
for me and you need to get on with your life. I'm really sorry that it has
come to this. I will always think of you fondly and I hope that you will
also think of me, if not fondly, then at least not bitterly.
Please send my regards to your mother.
Tell her that I am sorry that I will not be able to attend her anniversary
reception as it would not be right since we are not together
anymore.
Sincerely,
Frank

#2)
Tom,
Things just can't go on like this any
longer. I cry every night and it seems like I'm forever carrying around a
ton of bricks on my shoulders. I'm fed up. I'm tired of standing on a bridge
that is still burning and the truth is that I'm about ready to jump. Yeah,
that's right. You know exactly what I'm talking about. Really, how much longer
do you expect me to hang on while you're still married to her?
Yes, it's true that I knew that you were
married when I met you but that was eight months ago so don't even think
you can get by with that excuse again. Yes, you were married but you were
"supposedly" going through a divorce. You were "fixing" to get your own
apartment. You said that you had told her all of this. But if you had told
her all of this, why are you still toting her and her kids to church every
Sunday? Why are you still living in her house? This is the strangest divorce
that I've ever seen.
The longer that time goes by, the more
that I start to realize that there is no divorce. You're never going to leave
her. I'm just being played and I'm not going to stand by and take it any
longer. I have never been anybody's fool and I'm not going to be yours any
more.
So, here's how things stand. You can either
move all of your stuff out of her house and into your own apartment or you
can come get all of your things from my house and take it home to your wife.
I wonder what she'll say when she sees those silk boxers that I bought you
for your birthday? Or better yet, maybe she would like to read all of our
love letters that I have stored in that hat box.
I just really can't believe that I fell
for the oldest game in the book. I always thought I was smarter than that.
I definitely know that I deserve better. And you know what? This could have
probably went on a lot longer but I saw you two at the grocery store the
other day when you told me that you were working late. Thomas, a man who
is divorcing his wife does not hold hands with her as she shops for baked
goods!
It just makes me madder every time I think
about it. Just forget it. Don't even bother to try to patch things up now.
Just come and get your stuff. I'll have it all boxed and I'll leave it on
the front porch. Come and get it while I'm at work tomorrow. Don't even try
to come see me. I'm through. If you even dare try to contact me, I'll call
Elizabeth and tell her all about your dirty little secret: ME!
Ann
